Chinese restaurants in the United States range from steam-table lunch counters to white-tablecloth Cantonese seafood halls, and most fall somewhere in between: a laminated menu, a lunch special board, and combo plates priced a few dollars below the dinner menu. Ordering by number off the menu is normal and speeds things up, especially at takeout counters. Family-style ordering, where a table shares several dishes with rice rather than each person getting an individual entree, is standard at sit-down spots and usually cheaper per person. Many neighborhood restaurants are cash-preferred or charge a small card fee, so it is worth asking or checking the door before you order. Delivery apps cover most areas, but calling the restaurant directly is often faster and avoids the markup.

The business lists hours on 6 days of the week. The most common schedule is 11 am–2:30 pm. Note that it does not open on Monday. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (919) 967-6133. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, hunamrestaurant.net.

Chapel Hill is in North Carolina, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Chapel Hill follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Visiting Hunam is like seeing an old friend. As soon as you walk through the door, you are happy you're there and you know you're welcome. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the service is always efficient. The food is so good - takeout and dining in never disappoints. I knew it would be good when the won ton soup was so flavorful and tasty - a simple dish that's often overlooked. The roast pork fried rice is another favorite, and I also love the spicy beef. Now I'm craving Hunam!

Came with a group and the whole steamed fish was the best thing on the table. It arrives head to tail under a pile of scallions and cilantro in a light soy dressing, and the flesh was silky and clean tasting, not fishy at all. If you've never had fish served whole, start here. The roast duck, garlic pea shoots, and beef stew hot pot were all solid too. Hunam is a real find in Chapel Hill.

Overall a fine place to go. It is very run down on the outside, so much so we thought it had been closed for years but nope. Though the inside is on the small side, it has very pretty decor, the lamps above each table are lovely and the freestanding tables have a beautiful lotus design (vs the booths with simple Chinese zodiac placemats). Server was quiet but attentive and got everything on our order correct. Food was pretty good. The chicken in the Moo Goo Gai Pan was haphazardly cut into all different sizes and piled on the plate, some long and stringy and some decent chunks. They tasted fine but they just looked suspect The sauce was very good and the vegetables were cut and cooked well, I just wasn’t a fan of chicken that was obviously prepared with little care. The other people I was with ordered Sesame Chicken and General Tso chicken. The sesame chicken had a very nice chicken:breading ratio, as I don’t like too much breading, and the sauce was good if not on the sweet side. The General Tso was particularly spicy for our tastes, but we are very mild people so others may like it. Again the vegetables were cut and cooked perfectly crisp tender, and the meat seemed more caref

Hunam in Chapel Hill is one of those rare places that quietly becomes part of the fabric of a community. There’s a reason it’s been around for decades. From the moment you walk in, there’s a sense that this place is cared for. Not curated for trendiness, not redesigned every few years to keep up, but cared for in a steady, genuine way. Nelson and his wife run Hunam with a kind of consistency and warmth that you can feel. It’s the kind of hospitality that doesn’t need to announce itself; it just shows up in how you’re greeted, how your food is prepared, and how the space is maintained. The back party room is a hidden gem. The walls are lined with beautiful wallpaper he imported from China. Sitting around the large round tables with a lazy Susan in the center feels almost ceremonial, like you’re meant to slow down, share, and stay awhile. It’s not just a place to eat, it’s a place to gather. The food is simple, satisfying, and reliably good. The kind of dishes you crave after a long day, flavorful, comforting, and generously portioned. Even better, it’s still affordable, which feels increasingly rare. Hunam hasn’t lasted this long by chasing trends. It’s lasted because it’s roote

Fantastic Cantonese food in RTP! Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The crispy noodles with seafood, walnut shrimp, and steamed fish were standouts. Great service, generous portions, and everything tasted authentic.
